Data Controls
See how to view, export, and delete your data
Effective Date: March 20, 2026
Cakeday is a local-first app. There is no Cakeday account and no developer-hosted database for your birthday records. This page explains how to control data that lives on your device, in your private iCloud container, or in files you export yourself.
What You Control
You control the following categories of data directly:
- Birthday records, notes, avatars, groups, and app preferences stored on your device.
- Synced app data stored in your private iCloud container, if iCloud Sync is enabled.
- Exported files such as
.cakeday, JSON, CSV, and encrypted.cakesharefiles. - The language-preference cookie and the other site preferences stored by your browser.
Edit or Delete Records
You can edit or delete individual records directly inside Cakeday. When a record is deleted, it is removed from local app storage. If iCloud Sync is enabled for the relevant data, the deletion is also reflected in your private iCloud container.
Manage iCloud Sync
If you do not want app data stored in iCloud, turn off iCloud Sync in Cakeday.
When you disable iCloud Sync, Cakeday may offer you the option to remove the appโs cloud data from your private iCloud container. Choosing that option permanently deletes the synced cloud copy associated with Cakeday.
Because the iCloud container belongs to your Apple Account, we cannot access or delete that data for you.
Export, Backup, and Shared Files
Cakeday supports user-initiated exports such as .cakeday, JSON, CSV, and encrypted .cakeshare files. Once you export or share a file, you control where it is stored or sent.
If you choose to send exported files through Mail, Messages, AirDrop, Files, or another third-party service, that transfer is governed by your device settings and the third-party service you choose.
Remove Local App Data
If iCloud Sync is disabled, removing the app from your device removes the local app data stored with that app installation.
If iCloud Sync is enabled, uninstalling the app does not automatically delete data already stored in your private iCloud container. Disable iCloud Sync and remove the cloud copy if you want that synced data deleted as well.
Website Cookie Controls
The Cakeday website may set a functional cookie named cakeday-lang to remember your preferred language.
You can clear or block that cookie through your browser settings. Removing the cookie only affects language preference on the website; it does not affect app data.
Website Local Storage
Besides that cookie, the Cakeday website keeps a few preferences in your browserโs local storage:
- Your language and appearance (light or dark) choices.
- Your recent documentation searches.
- Small display state for the homepage demo card, and your scroll position within a documentation page for the current browser session.
This data stays in your browser. It is never sent to us or to any third party, and it contains no birthday records. Clearing site data for this website in your browser settings removes all of it, and the site simply returns to its defaults.
Account Deletion Requests
Cakeday does not create or maintain user accounts. For that reason, there is no separate account deletion workflow.
If you want to remove your app data, use the controls above on your device and, if applicable, in your private iCloud container.
