Friend-Timezone Reminders
Friend-Timezone Reminders make a birthday reminder follow the other person's local time instead of your current time zone. Learn how to enable it per friend.
Friend-Timezone Reminders let a birthday reminder follow the other person’s local time instead of your current time zone.
This is useful when you travel, when a friend lives abroad, or when you want the reminder to match the start of the friend’s birthday where they are.
What It Changes
Normally, Cakeday schedules reminders in your current local time zone. If your reminder time is 9:00 AM, the notification arrives at 9:00 AM where you are.
When Notify at Friend’s Timezone is enabled, Cakeday schedules the reminder at the friend’s local reminder time. If the friend is in Tokyo and your reminder time is 9:00 AM, the reminder is based on 9:00 AM in Tokyo, then delivered at the matching time for you.
Requirements
The friend must have a saved time zone. The only way to set it is by choosing Friend’s Timezone in the Notifications section of the edit screen. A birth city saved for birth-time details is independent and does not affect reminder timing.
The timezone picker has a Common Timezones shortcut list, and you can search any city in any language or script — each result shows the city, country, and its UTC offset. A saved zone is displayed as a representative city with its offset.
Where to Enable It
Open a friend, tap Edit, then go to Notifications:
- Turn on App Notification.
- Turn on Notify at Friend’s Timezone.
- Choose or confirm Friend’s Timezone.
The footer previews the friend’s reminder time and your local equivalent, so you can confirm it before saving.
Examples
If your reminder time is 9:00 AM:
- A friend in your current time zone reminds you at 9:00 AM local time.
- A friend in London reminds you when it is 9:00 AM in London.
- If you travel later, the reminder still stays anchored to the friend’s time zone.
Interaction With Birthday Alarm
Birthday Alarm follows the friend’s time zone only when two settings are both on:
- Notify at Friend’s Timezone is enabled for that friend, and
- Ring at Friend’s Timezone, a global toggle in Birthday Alarm settings, is also on.
When both are on, the normal notification and the alarm stay aligned around the friend’s local birthday.
When to Leave It Off
Leave the setting off when you want all reminders to arrive according to your own local schedule, regardless of where the other person lives.
For example, if you always write birthday messages at night after work, a local-time reminder may be easier than a friend-timezone reminder.
